Arctic Drive weather guide: blizzards, whiteouts and tornadoes
Prepare for Arctic Drive’s physical storms: blizzards that move cargo, whiteout driving, long nights, and the tornadoes announced in November 2026.
WP 03Waypoints / 7 sections
Arctic Drive does not need monsters to create tension. The weather is the antagonist: wind that moves physical objects, whiteouts that erase the road, long nights and — as of November 2026 — tornadoes. The cold kills you slowly, but a bad storm can take the car, the cargo and the run in a single minute.
The game is pre-launch, so this guide separates confirmed weather behavior from the parts we still need to test. It does not publish made-up warning times or storm frequencies.
What the weather system does
The official feature list confirms blizzards, whiteouts and a full day-night cycle. The August 2026 update went further: blizzards now physically move objects with high force. That means a storm is not just a visual filter. It can rearrange your camp, throw loose cargo and make a parked car a worse shelter than a building.
The same update says storms now start spawning from day two and that storm frequency was balanced. Demo v0.19.2 says the scenario storm stops after 180 seconds, but that is a demo objective timer, not a universal weather duration. Do not use it as a forecast.
Confirmed weather-related systems include:
- Blizzards and whiteouts with reduced visibility and physical wind.
- A full day-night cycle, with longer days after a demo balance pass.
- Snow and frost on the windscreen, including a third-person frost effect that adapts to how much frost the player has scraped.
- A storm scanner base module that warns of incoming blizzards; its range and lead time are not published.
- Tornadoes, announced on November 4, 2026. More below.
Blizzards and whiteouts
A blizzard is a compound problem: cold, wind, low visibility and physical cargo disruption. The worst mistake is treating it as a driving challenge. If the road disappears, the safe move is usually to stop, secure the car and find shelter — not to keep the speedometer steady and hope the route continues.
The store description says players should seek shelter during whiteouts, keep heaters running and watch hunger, thirst and body temperature. That is the intended loop. It also says a stop might give you “nothing but safety from a blizzard,” which is a reminder that shelter has value even when the loot is gone.
What to do when a blizzard hits:
- Slow down before visibility forces you to. A controlled stop is better than a crash into a tree line you did not see.
- Get the car off the road if you can do it safely. Do not abandon it in a position that blocks your own exit.
- Secure loose cargo. Wind moves objects. A cargo box or transport box is more than storage; it is a storm anchor.
- Choose heat over distance. A heater, a fire or a running engine can keep you alive. A cold car in a whiteout is a metal box.
- Wait for a window. The storm scanner can help, but you still need to judge the sky and the road. Do not drive into a whiteout because the timer says it is almost over.
Tornadoes: the November 2026 reveal
On November 4, 2026, the developer announced tornadoes in a Steam post titled “3 weeks before we take Steam by STORM.” The warning is specific: outrun or hide from them, or you might find yourself ragdolling through the air, losing the truck, or dropping everything you collected along the way.
The same post does not say whether tornadoes are already in the demo or only in the Early Access build. The wording is part of a “road to Early Access” update, so treat them as a launch-window hazard, not a confirmed demo feature. We will verify their presence, spawn rules and warning signs after launch.
The practical implication is already clear: a tornado is not a fight. If you see one, the priority is to protect the player and the vehicle, not the cargo. A trailer or a full truck bed is replaceable; a lost run is not.

Night, frost and visibility
The day-night cycle is confirmed. Official screenshots show night driving with dashboard lights, headlights and a dark road. Demo v0.18.0 added a frost effect that adapts to how much frost the player has scraped from the windscreen. That makes the ice scraper a real visibility tool, not a cosmetic item.
At night, your effective speed should drop. Headlights show a cone, not a map. A passenger with a light or a second set of eyes is genuinely useful in co-op. If the windscreen is frosted, scrape it before you drive; the game tracks how much frost remains.
The game also has an aurora, which is beautiful and useless for navigation. Do not mistake a bright sky for a clear road.
A storm checklist
| Priority | Action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Shelter | Find a building, a windbreak or a safe place to stop. | Visibility and body temperature are both falling. |
| 2. Heat | Start a fire, heater or engine; eat warm food if you have it. | Cold is a slow damage source; warmth buys time. |
| 3. Cargo | Close boxes, secure the trailer, move loose items inside. | Wind moves physical objects with high force. |
| 4. Fuel | Check the tank before keeping the engine running for heat. | A warm night can become a stranded morning. |
| 5. Exit | Park so you can leave without moving a trailer or digging out. | The storm may end; you still need a road. |
Driving in low visibility
There is no confirmed “safe speed” for a whiteout. The right speed depends on the road, the load and the car. What we can say is that the game models damage, weight and traction, so the usual arcade instinct — hold the accelerator and steer by memory — is exactly wrong.
- Use the zoom. Right-click zoom is confirmed while driving or riding as a passenger.
- Use third-person when judging a trailer. The closed beta added third-person camera controls and improved them later.
- Brake earlier with a trailer. Trailers consume fuel when attached and change the vehicle’s handling. A loaded trailer is not a sports car with a box on the back.
- Do not trust a clear minute. Fog and snow can close in quickly. Keep a return distance in mind.
- Turn on the lights. It sounds obvious; in a dark cab with a frosted windscreen, it is easy to forget.
What is still unknown
- The exact blizzard frequency, duration and severity scaling by distance or biome.
- Whether tornadoes are in the demo, the Early Access launch build, or both.
- How tornado spawns are telegraphed and whether they can be predicted with the storm scanner.
- Whether shelter quality varies by building type and whether a car can count as full shelter.
- The storm scanner’s range, power draw and warning lead time.
- How wind affects a loaded trailer versus a roof rack or an unsecured truck bed.
