Arctic Drive co-op guide: roles, revival and four-player plans
A practical Arctic Drive co-op guide covering hosting, revival kits, proximity voice chat, role division, saves, and the crossplay facts.
WP 05Waypoints / 9 sections
Arctic Drive supports one to four players in online co-op, and the co-op design is not cosmetic. The publisher describes coordinating roles, sharing supplies, reviving teammates and keeping the vehicle rolling. Starting loot adjusts by player count, and the starting garage has revival kits for groups of two to four.
The game does not use fixed classes. Any role system is a player-made agreement. That is actually good news: you can divide the work around the people you have, not around a menu you have to fill.
What co-op supports
| Feature | Status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Online co-op | Confirmed | 1–4 players; Steam lists online co-op and co-op categories. |
| Solo play | Confirmed | Steam lists single-player. You manage every role yourself. |
| Local co-op / split-screen | Not announced | No split-screen or local co-op has been confirmed. |
| PvP | Not announced | The game is a co-op survival experience; no PvP mode has been announced. |
| Proximity voice chat | Confirmed | Added in the closed-beta recap; voice activation by default, push-to-talk available. |
| Revival kits | Confirmed | Added for 2–4 player groups; kits appear in the starting garage. |
| Host / join friends | Confirmed | The publisher explicitly says host or join friends. |
| Steam ↔ Xbox crossplay | Unconfirmed | Steam-to-Steam play is confirmed. Steam does not list a Cross-Platform Multiplayer category. |

Hosting, joining and saving
The closed-beta recap confirms save/load for solo and multiplayer. Leaving to the main menu automatically saves, and multiplayer saves are stored by the host. That makes the host the custodian of the run: if the host loses the save or changes machine, the group’s progress may not travel with them.
Practical rules for a group:
- Pick a stable host. The person with the best connection and the most consistent schedule should host. Do not rotate hosts casually unless you are prepared to lose continuity.
- Save before a session ends. The game auto-saves when you leave to the main menu, but a deliberate stop is safer than an alt-tab or a crash.
- Do not assume cross-platform saves. No cross-save feature has been announced. Keep the group on one platform unless the developer confirms otherwise.
- Plan the session length. A run can end in a storm, a crash or a bad decision. Agree on a stopping point before someone has to leave.
Steam currently lists “Save Anytime” but does not list Steam Cloud. That does not prove there is no cloud sync; it means the store page does not advertise it. We will verify after launch.
Roles that actually help
The game does not assign classes, so the useful roles are the jobs that otherwise get forgotten. Four players, four responsibilities:
| Role | Owns | Never forgets |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | Speed, route, reversing, trailer placement | The return distance and the state of the brakes. |
| Mechanic | Engine panel, radiator, oil, battery, tires, repair kits | A warning is cheaper than a failure. |
| Scavenger | POI search, cargo sorting, salvage and recycling | Weight is a cost; not every shiny object is worth the fuel. |
| Quartermaster | Fuel margin, food and water, weather window, revival kits | The run ends when the supplies do, not when the road does. |
For three players, merge quartermaster into the driver or scavenger. For two, pair driver + quartermaster and mechanic + scavenger. For solo, you are all four; that is why the first leg should be short and the reserve should be generous.
Revival and downtime
Revival kits were added for 2–4 player groups in demo v0.18.14 and refined in v0.19.2, with kits placed in the starting garage. The exact revive time, range and consumption rules are not published, but the design intent is clear: a downed teammate is a recoverable problem only if someone brought the tool.
A simple revival protocol:
- Call it immediately. Use voice chat; do not assume the group saw the same thing.
- Secure the area first. A second downed player is worse than a slow revive.
- Keep one kit in the vehicle. A kit in the base is not a kit when the base is a kilometer away.
- Resupply after every use. Do not leave the group with zero revival capacity for the next leg.
The closed-beta recap says players now reset properly after being revived. It also says the game has fall damage and heavy impacts can stun the player. Revival fixes the downed state, not the bad decision that caused it.
Voice chat and communication
Proximity voice chat is confirmed. Voice activation is enabled by default, and push-to-talk is available. The closed beta added the feature; the developer has not published a full audio settings guide.
Proximity voice is a design feature, not a party-chat replacement. It means distance and line of sight matter. Use short, specific calls:
- “Stopping at the cabin ahead; fuel at half.”
- “Radiator dry; need water before we move.”
- “Trailer is heavy; braking earlier.”
- “I’m down by the west wall; one kit left.”
If someone cannot use voice, agree on a text fallback and a simple ping system in advance. The game’s environment is already noisy; a clear plan beats a loud one.

Cargo and base division
Sharing supplies is a confirmed design point, but the exact inventory rules are not documented. Do not assume a shared wallet or a global storage chest. The safest approach is physical and explicit:
- Assign a vehicle or trailer as the group cache. Keep fuel, food, water and repair kits in the same container.
- Give each player a personal emergency pouch. A light, water, food and a repair option should not depend on someone else being nearby.
- Label roles through placement, not hope. If the mechanic’s tools live in the same box as the decorations, the mechanic will not find them in a storm.
- Do not overload the shared rig. One player’s loot is everyone’s weight penalty.
Our co-op loadout planner turns these categories into a printable checklist with role assignments.
Crossplay and platform facts
This is the part where a lot of pre-launch guides guess. We will not. Here is what is actually confirmed:
- Steam-to-Steam multiplayer is confirmed. Demo v0.19.2 explicitly improved Steam joining and Steam-to-Steam play without crossplay.
- Crossplay between Steam and Xbox is not confirmed. Steam does not list a Cross-Platform Multiplayer category, and no publisher document we have found promises it.
- Xbox Game Preview is a confirmed platform. The publisher lists PC (Steam) and Xbox (Game Preview).
- No local co-op or split-screen has been announced.
If you are buying on Xbox specifically to play with Steam friends, wait for an explicit crossplay confirmation. The absence of a crossplay category is not proof that it will never happen, but it is not a promise either.
A four-player launch plan
A simple plan for the first session:
- Before launch: agree on a host, a platform and a two-hour window. Install the demo on the same machines to test voice and connection.
- First 15 minutes: dress, inspect the car, split the garage. The driver does not get to “just start it” while everyone else is still looting.
- First leg: choose a short route with a return option. The driver and quartermaster agree on the fuel margin before the engine starts.
- First stop: secure the car, assign the scavenger and mechanic, and keep one person on overwatch for weather and the road.
- First storm: stop early, secure cargo, and treat shelter as a success. Do not spend the group’s revival kits on a heroic drive.
- First session end: return to the main menu deliberately, confirm the save, and write down the next objective.
What is still unknown
- Whether Steam and Xbox players can play together.
- Whether there are dedicated servers, drop-in/drop-out, or host migration.
- The exact inventory-sharing rules and whether supplies are instanced per player.
- How difficulty and loot scale with two, three and four players.
- The revive time, range and kit consumption rules.
- Whether proximity voice has a radio or long-range alternative.
- Whether cross-save or Steam Cloud support will be added.
